About Eva “Chicory” Swa (she/they)

Lead Instructor, Mom & me & Youth Discovery Project

What unique strengths, identities, traits, values and/or interests do you have that influence what you offer in classes and our community?
I have a homesteading background using organic practices with a focus on sustainability and water conservation, including volunteer work with Oregon Extension office & learning from Master gardeners. My approach is community centered with a genuine sense of silly and fun. I enjoy incorporating self-care components in my approach to life, such as singing with birds and talking to bugs, which provides a sense of attunement & feeling immersed in nature. I try to share opportunities to utilize your senses while we are in the moment together.

Where did you grow up? What early childhood experiences did you have outside, with animals, plants, water, soil, fire, etc. that led you to teaching at PLG or enjoying nature?

Raised in the desert, I learned how to appreciate water sources and find respite from the heat. I grew up with very long summers, bright star-filled skies and a love for hiking steep slopes to watch a beautiful sunset/sunrise. I traveled in my 20s living in Hawai'i, New England, Florida, and California where I continued my love for the healing elements of nature by attending courses in Herbalism.

I have lived in Oregon for 10 years where I've volunteered for multiple organizations and/or non-profits that bring me closer towards the things I enjoy in life. I worked in an office for a number of years, and I decided to pivot into a different career path after reaching a point of burn out. I became a mother in 2024, where I found PLG as a scholarship recipient in the Mom & Me class. I instantly fell in love with the property and the community vibe. I signed up to volunteer and started as an assistant teacher in Summer 2025.

What philosophies or practices are important to you when engaging students? What’s your approach to supporting kids and families & engaging them in learning?

I grew up with a special needs sibling who was very afraid of the outdoors. This taught me to approach people with patience and understanding. During interactions with me on the farm, I try to meet everyone where they're at, and invite them to have safe nature immersive experiences such as holding rolly pollies and red wiggler worms. Not everyone wants to touch bugs the first time and that's okay! It's these little baby steps to feel safe in our surroundings and inside of our bodies. I like to remind everyone how happy I am to see them because I genuinely care about our community.

What experience & education do you have that you want to share with the PLG community?

I'm a registered Traditional Health Worker with OHA, Youth Peer Support. I bring a certain set of skills to help connect to other resources in our community. I'm currently a student at LCC working towards a degree in Human Services.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy camping while foraging for berries and mushrooms with my family. I play a few instruments and I like to play the harmonica when foraging - makes a lovely bear deterrent!
