CALLING ALL HOMESCHOOL GROUPS, YOUTH GROUPS & SCHOOLS!!

Parker Learning Gardens is a nonprofit educational farm that hosts field trips for youth all year long. Our staff can accommodate groups of up to 30 people including adult chaperones.

Our 33-acre organic farm is home to 12 Demonstration Gardens, a 3-acre Bamboo Forest, a Fruit Orchard with 500 trees, a Linden Tree Grove, and a 4-acre wild “old-growth” Hazelnut Orchard. We rotate pigs and chickens to “work” the farm, in addition to our resident sheep and goats.

We practice organic, regenerative agro-ecology with possible lessons including: seed germination, organic gardening, soil science, biodiversity, decomposition, plant identification, pollination, nutrition, ethnobotany, ecology, habitat restoration, biochar benefits, water conservation, gardening with pigs and chickens, cover cropping and so much more.

Cost: $10 per youth participant for a 1-1.5 hour tour & $15 per youth participant for 2 hours including a focused lesson. Adult chaperones are included in this price. Contact us for longer field trip options or adult group tours.

IMPORTANT INFOMATION:

Depending on the season, we can offer a variety of guided customizable field trips. Below is a list of options to provide an idea of how we have put together field trips for other visiting classroom groups. Each of these options can be modified to provide appropriate content and excitement to any particular age or experience level. Let us know what you would like us to focus in on, and we will do our best to compliment your existing curriculum.

General Educational Tour of Farm & Gardens (1 to 1.5 hours – $10/student)

1. Our general tour includes a walk through our demonstration gardens, an overlook of our fruit and hazelnut orchards, and a visit to see our hardest working farmhands – the goats, pigs and chickens. Topics we will discuss may include: organic farming, regenerative agriculture practices, plant identification & uses, animal care & needs, how to respect P.L.A.Y. - people, land, animals, & yourself.

2. Sometimes we can squeeze in a mini lesson during a 1.5 hour tour, like: a bamboo forest adventure with discussions about the grass family & carbon sequestration, an herb exploration including smelling and tasting different herbs in the mint family, a short worm/vermicompost lesson, or something similar. It depends on how fast everyone walks and if there are any delays. Please let us know if you’d like to prioritize any of these mini lessons in your general tour.

3. Our general tour includes quite a bit of walking, with many retreats from the elements along the way.

Longer tour or In-depth lesson (2 hours – $15/student)

1. Lessons and hands on activities involving Biochar, Soil Regeneration, Composting, & Vermi(worm)composting

2. Bamboo Forest Exploration: Bamboo Harvesting with Saws & Lesson on Native Bees; Make & take home Native Bee Houses

3. Bamboo Forest Exploration: Bamboo Harvesting with Saws & Lesson on Ethnobotany & carbon sequestration, Make, learn to play & take home: Pūʻohe, a Hawaiian bamboo trumpet

4. Cooking or food / drink preparation & a rainbow nutrition lesson

5. Pigs in the Garden – Utilizing pigs (animals) to regenerate soil and as organic pest control, ethical pig husbandry, rotational grazing, and nutrition needs (they’re omnivores like us). This may include meeting the chickens as well!

6. Custom tours or lesson depending on the season in any of the topics included above or on our website.
